Keyboard shortcuts in MathType Web
Reading time: 4minReference for keyboard shortcuts and automatic input features in MathType Web.
Summary
Use the tables below to look up shortcuts for editing equations, inserting structures, applying formatting and navigating the toolbar, together with the input sequences supported by Autoformat.
This reference applies to MathType Web in Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and HTML editor integrations. Availability can depend on the integration, editor configuration and operating system.
For step-by-step navigation instructions, see Navigate the MathType Web editor using a keyboard.
Ctrl means Control and Cmd means Command on macOS. A plus sign indicates keys pressed together. Enter is labelled Return on some keyboards.

For supported clipboard formats and workflows between applications, see Copy and paste equations in MathType Web and other applications.
Cursor movement and selection
Cursor movement follows the equation's structure, including the slots of fractions, roots and scripts.
| Key or combination | Action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys | Move between characters and through mathematical structures. |
Home / End
|
Move to the beginning or end of the current editing context. |
Shift + arrow keys |
Extend or reduce the selection. |
Shift+Home / Shift+End
|
Select to the beginning or end of the current editing context. |
Backspace |
Delete content before the cursor. |
On macOS, use the backward-delete key, usually labelled Delete, for the Backspace action.
At certain structure boundaries, smart deleting highlights what will be removed before a second press confirms deletion. For instructions on removing a structure while preserving its contents, see Working with mathematical structures.
Mathematical structures
| Key or combination | Action |
|---|---|
Ctrl+↑ |
Insert a superscript slot. |
Ctrl+↓ |
Insert a subscript slot. |
↑ / ↓
|
Move between vertically arranged slots, such as a fraction's numerator and denominator, where the cursor position allows it. |
Enter in the editing area |
Add a line where supported, or a row in an elementary arithmetic template. |
Space in an elementary arithmetic template |
Add indentation. |
Enter in the matrix size controls |
Confirm the dimensions and insert the matrix. |
Enter in a Contextual tab spacing field |
Apply the entered spacing value. |
Autoformat also provides keyboard input for fractions, superscripts and subscripts. See Autoformat below.
Formatting shortcuts
| Action | Windows/Linux | macOS |
|---|---|---|
| Toggle bold | Ctrl+B |

| Toggle italic | Ctrl+I |
Cmd+I |
These shortcuts affect selected content or subsequent input. For details about manual formatting, Automatic italic and regular text, see Formatting equations.
Toolbar tab shortcuts
These shortcuts open a standard toolbar tab and focus its first symbol. The number matches the tab's position, with 0 assigned to the tenth tab.

Automatic delimiter pairing
Typing an opening delimiter inserts the matching pair and places the cursor inside it.
| Opening delimiter | Inserted pair | Name |
|---|---|---|
( |
( ) |
Parentheses |
[ |
[ ] |
Square brackets |
{ |
{ } |
Braces |
The closing delimiter can be replaced to create a mixed pair, such as (0,1]. For instructions and configuration details, see Use Autoformat in MathType Web.
Notes
- Keyboard focus: Editing, formatting and code-window shortcuts require focus in the MathType editor.
- macOS modifiers: Use Command for common editing and formatting shortcuts, and Control for toolbar navigation and code-window shortcuts, as shown in the tables.
- Shortcut availability: Shortcuts may be disabled by the deployment or intercepted by the operating system, browser, host application or assistive technology.
- Toolbar configuration: Tab shortcuts describe the standard toolbar. Customized toolbars may differ.
- Context-sensitive keys: Enter and Space perform different actions depending on focus.
- Clipboard restrictions: If toolbar clipboard buttons display a browser restriction message, try the corresponding shortcut.
-
Autoformat availability: Enabled in Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace; configurable through the
autoformatparameter in other integrations. - Editor differences: MathType 7 and the new MathType editor have their own shortcut behaviour.
