Install MathType in Canvas (course-level)

When to use this: Enable MathType in a specific Canvas course when you don't have admin access or only need it available in selected courses.

What you'll achieve: After completing this guide, MathType will be available in the editor for that course.

Before you begin

Requirements

• Teacher permissions in the Canvas course

Steps

Open the course

Access the course where you want to enable MathType.

Go to Settings and open the Apps Center

Open the account configuration and manage external apps.

Search for MathType

Use the search bar to locate the app.

Add MathType as an App

Select MathType and click on Add App.

Verify it worked

• Open a page, assignment, or quiz in the course
• Confirm that the MathType (or ChemType) button appears in the content editor Apps menu

Options and variations

• If you need MathType in all courses, install it at the account level instead. You can find more details here
• If you also need chemical notation support, install ChemType by repeating the same steps and searching for "ChemType" in the App Center

Common errors

MathType does not appear in the Apps tab

Ensure you have teacher permissions in the course.

MathType does not appear in the editor

Verify that the app was correctly added to the course.
