                    Applicability

The information on this page applies to:
                    MathType for Windows
                    Microsoft Office for Windows
All supported versions of Word for Windows and Mac

                    Issue

You're working with a Microsoft Word document. There are MathType equations in the document, but you want to edit them with TeX, rather than double-click to open them in MathType You use the shortcut key Alt+\, make your edits to the TeX, and use Alt+\ to "toggle" them back to MathType equations. You notice that some of the inline equations are now displayed equations when you do that.

                    Reason

MathType has a setting named "Inline Equation", either on or off. This setting is in MathType Format menu. Setting the "Inline Equation" value correctly depends on inserting the equations correctly. If you copy and paste an equation from MathType, MathType will not know where you will paste it into your document. Therefore, the value of "Inline Equation" will be whatever you manually set it to be in the Format menu. If you are copying an equation from one place in the document to paste into another, note that we do not recommend copying and pasting equations this way. Still, the value of "Inline Equation" will be whatever it was in the equation you copied.

                    Solution

This value will always be set correctly if you use any of these buttons on the MathType tab in Word:

If you insert equations into Word using these commands and subsequently toggle the equations to TeX, inline equations will remain inline equations. Display equations will remain display equations when you toggle back to MathType If you prefer to copy & paste from MathType into Word, be sure to verify the setting of "Inline Equation" in MathType Format menu before you copy the equation.

We hope this has been helpful. As always, please let us know if you have questions about this or if you have additional techniques that work. We'd love to hear from you.
