MathType Toolbar/Tab has disappeared from Microsoft Word
Reading time: 20minTech Note 133
Applicability
The information on this page applies to: |
MathType for Windows |
MathType for Mac |
Microsoft Word for Windows |
Microsoft Word for Mac |
Issue
Occasionally the MathType Toolbar/Tab will disappear from the Microsoft Word Toolbar/Ribbon.
Reason
When Microsoft Office Auto-update runs and installs new updates, add-ins will occasionally be disabled and in doing so, removes any Toolbar/Ribbon additions. Depending on the version of Microsoft Word you are using, this can be easily corrected.
Solution
Before we go further, it's necessary to know precisely which version of MathType you have, and which version of Word.
Macintosh (Windows follows)
- With MathType open, click the MathType menu and select About MathType:
(After you verify your version, click anywhere inside the "About MathType" screen to dismiss it.)
- If your version is MathType 6.0, please upgrade before continuing.
- If your version is MathType 6.7-something, but not 6.7h, please download and install MathType 6.7h before proceeding. You don't need to remove or uninstall anything, and your existing product key will still work. Just install the new one. If that doesn't fix the issue, continue…
- If your version is MathType 6.7h or MathType 7.something, please continue…
- With Word open, click the Word menu and select About Word.
If your version of Word is 15.xx but earlier than 15.39, do not proceed! These steps will not work.
- If you have confirmed you are using MathType 6.7h or later, and Word 2011 please click to the next page to proceed with the rest of the article.
- If you have confirmed you are using MathType 7.0 or later, and not Word 2011, please click to the next page to proceed with the rest of the article.
Windows
- With MathType open, expand the Help menu (by clicking it), and select About MathType. Note the version number. Dismiss the About MathType dialogue by clicking anywhere inside it.
- Now in Word, if your version of Word has a File tab at the far left of the ribbon, click File. If it has the "Office button" instead of "File", click the Office button.
- If you see Account on the left, click it. If the Account isn't there, Help should be. If so, click Help.
- Look for "About Microsoft Word" for the version number and bit level on the right.
- This will reveal the version of Word and (if you're using Office 2010 or later) the bit level (32-bit or 64-bit). Example:
Microsoft Word 2016 MSO (16.0.7127.1026) 32-bit
- Once you have confirmed your version of MathType and Word, ensure your version of MathType supports your version of Word:
- Word for Office 365 requires MathType 6.9b or later (not 6.9 or 6.9a)
- Word 2016 and later requires MathType 6.9b or later (not 6.9 or 6.9a)
- Word 2013 requires MathType 6.9 or later
- Word 2010 requires MathType 6.7 or later
- (64-bit Word requires MathType 6.8 or later)
- Word 2007 requires MathType 6.0 or later
- If your version of MathType does not support your version of Word, you do not need to proceed. This is why the MathType tab is not visible. Your only option is to upgrade.
- If your versions of MathType and Word are compatible, proceed to page 2 of this article, depending on your version of Word:
MathType Toolbar/Menu has disappeared from Microsoft Word 2011
Note
These steps do not apply to Office 2016/2019/365 (i.e., Office 15/16) for Mac!

Solution for Word 2011
Caution
If your version of Word is 15.xx or 16.xx, do not proceed! These steps will not work.
- Launch Microsoft Word.
- If the MathType menu is present in Word, but not the MathType toolbar, click to expand the View menu. In Toolbars, click to place a checkmark beside MathType If that works, you can skip the remaining steps. If that doesn't work, read on…
- Click to expand the Tools menu, then Templates and Add-ins.
- In the resulting window, under Global templates and add-ins, the following item(s) should be present and have a checkmark next to each:
- If the item(s) from step 4 are present and checked, click OK. If they're present but not checked, click to place a checkmark in the box, then click OK. The MathType toolbar and menu should now be present in Word.
- If the items from step 4 are not present, that's OK. Please try this:
- Click the Add button. This will open a window titled Choose a File.
- In the window, navigate to this folder:
MathType 6:Office Support (for MathType 6.7h) MathType Support (for MathType 7 and later)
- If you are using MathType 6.7h, you will see the following items in the folder:
MathType Commands.dot wordcmds.dot
- Select (one of them at a time if using MathType 6.7h), and click Open. This will bring it into the Templates and Add-ins box. If using MathType 6.7h, you will then need to click Add one more time to bring in the other add-in (either MathType Commands.dot or wordcmds.dot).
- Once you have both of them listed under Templates and Add-ins, the boxes on the left side should have a checkmark inside, but if they don't, click to place a checkmark there.
- Click OK.
- This should restore the MathType toolbar & menu in Word. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to load them in.
If you have meticulously worked through this process and the MathType tab is still not on the ribbon in Word 2011, please write and let us know you've gone through the steps here, and you still don't have a MathType toolbar or menu in Word. Please let us know what versions of macOS, Word, and MathType you're using, as well as your MathType product key.

Solution on Windows for Word 2016 and later, and Word for Office 365, 32-bit
Note
This article assumes you have confirmed you are using 64-bit Office. If you haven't verified this, don't just guess and don't assume. In fact, most computers running 64-bit Windows are not using 64-bit Office. They are using 32-bit Office. The steps below will not work for 32-bit Office.
- Launch Microsoft Word.
- From the File tab, choose Options.
- In the resulting window, from the left-side navigation menu, choose Add-ins.
- Using the drop-down menu located at the bottom of the window, choose Word Add-ins and click the "Go" button.
- In the resulting window, under Global Templates and add-ins, the following items should be present:
Note
If you're using MathType 6.9b or 6.9d, the first item will be named MathType Commands 6 for Word 2016.dotm.
- If the items from the previous step are not present, proceed to the next step. If they are present, the MathType Commands" item should be checked (selected) if you're using MathType 7 and later. If you're using MathType 6.9b or 6.9d, both items should be checked.
- If the items from step 5 are not present, that's OK. Please try this:
- Click the Add button. This will open a window titled Add Template.
- In the window, navigate to one of these paths:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MathType\Office Support\64
- You will see the following items in the folder (among others):

- This should restore the MathType tab in Word. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to load it in.
Note
Note: If the process described above works for the current session of Word, but the tab is missing again when you close and reopen Word, you may need to manually add MathType 7 macro files to Word's startup folder. (This sometimes happens if you have to reinstall Word for a system problem, and sometimes for other reasons.) Unfortunately, the location of Word's startup folder sometimes varies from one computer to the next. Find the two files mentioned in step 7c above, and copy them to one of these locations. If the first one doesn't work, try the next, etc.

- In the window, navigate to this path:
C:\Program Files (x86)\xinfo:variable="MathType5"\Office Support\64
- You will see the following items in the folder (among others):

- Please select one of them at a time, and click Open. This will bring it into the Add-Ins box. You will need to click Add one more time to bring in the other add-in ( MathType Commands….dotm or WordCmds.dot).
- Once you have them listed under Templates and Add-ins, the boxes on the left side should have a checkmark inside, but click to place a checkmark there if they don't. Click OK. (For MathType 7 and later, it's only necessary for xinfo:variable="MathType5" Commands 2010.dotm to have a checkmark).
- This should restore the MathType tab in Word. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to load it in.
